TRBOVLJE – DOBOVEC – KUM – TRBOVLJE

Interreg-Kum

Kum is the central peak of the Kumljansko hills. At 1220 meters, it is the highest peak of Zasavje and Dolenjska, some even call it Zasavski Triglav. It is a popular spot for hikers and cyclists from all over Slovenia. The view from the top in good weather extends almost all over Slovenia, and soon after the start of the ascent, it becomes clear to cyclists why the ascent to Kum is easily compared to that on Vršič. The ascent on Kum undoubtedly belongs to the first league and is among the top 5 Slovenian mountain (or road) biking goals. As a starting point, we suggest a parking lot at the Trbovlje railway station. Set off on a journey well prepared. Avoid the summer heat as the slope does not give up. We stick to the main road, which leads us to the village of Dobovec, where we follow the signs for Kum. You can expect about 9km of steep ascent on the asphalt and at the end another 2 km of addition on the macadam. In Dobovec, in an idyllic village with a church, a shop and Kajuh’s verses on the Borčevo monument, we recommend a short break, as it pays to enjoy the view and meet face to face with the giant chimney of the Trbovlje thermal power plant, which is the complete opposite of the green countryside.

When we turn right, we will notice a ski jump on the left. We continue along the main road, which leads us to the abandoned ski resort Lontovž. We continue along the main road all the way to the top, where the mountain lodge and the old church of St. Neža, and opposite it is a large RTV transmitter, which can also be seen from almost everywhere from afar. The legend of St. Neža and St. Jošt also testifies to this installation. The mountain lodge offers fresh meals and accommodation. At the top, there is also a lookout plate, which shows the better-known peaks of most of Slovenia, of course, those that can be seen from the top. In fine weather, the view from the top stretches from the nearby Posavje hills to the somewhat more distant Kamnik and Savinja Alps, the Karavanke and Julian Alps with Triglav. We suggest music enthusiasts to find out what impression the Laibach group left on Kum, which had its own event in 2003, under the leadership of the unconventional pastor Peter Mlakar in the church of St. Neža.
